Three establishments to face liquor license hearings

At the Selectmen’s meeting on November 15, among the key topics of discussion were the scheduling hearings on the results of an alcoholic license compliance check for serving minors earlier in the month, as well as the Selectmen’s position on various articles in the Special Town Meeting Warrant.

By a 4-0 vote with Selectman James MacDonald abstaining due to his
position with the State Treasurer’s office, those violation hearings
focusing on Hilton at Dedham Place, Wicked Fire Kissed Pizza and East
Dedham Liquors were scheduled for the Selectmen’s next meeting, set for
Thursday, December 6.

Most notably concerning the Warrant, the Selectmen voted 4-1 to accept
the Finance Committee recommendation that Article Seven, advocating the
formation of a new Senior Center Site Commitee and an appropriation of
$50,000, be indefinitely postponed. Immediately following that vote,
Selectman Michael Butler made a statement: “A resident approached me
earlier tonight, and he asked if I could just ask Bill (Keegan, the Town
Administrator) this question,” Butler said. ” ‘Could you ask Bill
to explain what town boards and committees must act to implement the
Council on Aging proposal? In other words, what is the existing
process?’ ” At that point the board continued its deliberations
regarding other FinCom recommendations about the Warrant.

In other business, the board presented Alan Royer of Royer Tree
Service with an engraved stone plaque and certificate of recognition for
outstanding service to the town. State Representative Paul McMurtry
gave brief remarks about the honoree, saying he had “gone above and
beyond in every aspect of his commitment to this community. Whether it’s
Flag Day or Dedham Day or local parades, he is really a dedicated
resident.” McMurtry then read aloud a commendation from the State House
of Representatives. Royer Tree Service regularly flies a giant American
flag over Dedham Square for the Flag Day Parade and helps install the
town’s Christmas Tree each year in the Square, among other efforts to
make special occasions more festive. Selectman Butler expressed thoughts
that his colleagues echoed when he said, “For a couple of generations,
we’ve been able to count on the Royer Family for all sorts of assistance
whenever we needed it.”

The board also unanimously approved all
requests by Dedham Square Circle to conduct its eighth annual Holiday
Stroll, with this year’s edition planned for Friday evening, November
30. Square Circle Executive Director Amy Haelsen summarized last year’s
Stroll as a major success, and discussed preparations for
another stellar event this year. “We had a great turnout last year – we
had over a thousand people come out for the Stroll,” she said. “This
year I want more than that. We’re raising the bar every year until we
get ten thousand people in the Square.” She requested that a portion of
the Keystone Lot be cordoned off, because the town’s Holiday Tree will
be placed there. “We’ll have the bandstand, and Santa Claus will make
his way down High Street.”

In addition, Dedham Pop Warner President David Morse made a
presentation regarding the program, including the pep rally and
Hockomock Super Bowl game for the D level team planned for the weekend
of November 17-18. He cited that team’s trip to the Super Bowl and the B
level team’s reaching the playoffs as evidence of positive performance.
He said, “We’ve been fortunate over the last five years to send at
least one team – one year we had two teams – to the Super Bowl (every
year). So the youth program is doing well.” Several Selectmen
congratulated Morse on those distinctions and wished the D team good
luck.
