Police take steps against four juveniles in hazing incident

leave a comment »

A hazing incident late last week apparently involving members of the Dedham High School football program has led to steps by the Dedham Police against four juveniles, according to a statement by the police and numerous media reports.

Yesterday the Dedham Police released a statement as follows in its entirety: “The Dedham Police Department has taken action against four juveniles as related to a matter which was reported to us on Friday September 21, 2012. The Dedham Police Department appreciates the cooperation of the School Department in investigating this matter. Because juvenile matters are not public, we will not release the identity of those involved or the specific charges. The investigation has moved to the next stages and the Dedham Police do not anticipate any more individuals charged.”

On Wednesday, Superintendent Doe distributed a statement announcing that the administration has found evidence of wrongdoing by students. “It is painful to report that the investigation has produced information for school administrators to conclude that there was a violation of the policies.” Those policies are part of the Memorandum of Understanding Between the Dedham Public Schools and the Dedham Police Department that became effective three weeks ago on the second day of the academic year. The superintendent’s statement noted that despite the community’s legitimate interest in the consequences for violators of the policies in question, “school officials are prohibited by federal and state laws from commenting on or disclosing information about individual student discipline.”

Other officials provided few or no further details. According to media reports Ron McCarthy, principal at Dedham High School and Michael Plansky, the school’s athletic director, did not offer information other than to refer all inquiries on this matter to Superintendent Doe’s office. Head Football Coach David Flynn officially said “No comment,” although several press outlets quoted him in pieces earlier this week.

In those stories including one by the website of WBZ-TV, sources indicated “the incident was sexual in nature and that one or two upper classmen assaulted a freshman in the locker room.”

The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that took effect earlier this month states in Section II.G. that mandatory reportable incidents include “Any incident in which any DPS student engages in hazing as defined in M.G.L. c. 269.” Section III of that document states that the responsible representatives of the Police Department and School Department will be the Juvenile Officer and building principal of the school the accused student or students attend, respectively.

That group represents the Dedham Police at events such as parades, funerals and memorial ceremonies. The previous Honor Guard uniforms were over twenty years old.

On behalf of Dedham Savings, bank President and CEO Peter Brown said, “We’ve always been supportive of the Dedham Police. We like to fill some gaps in budgets.”
